After riding a train for 82 minutes, Erik boards a bus for the last mile of his commute on a December morning. He displays his monthly train pass to the driver and continues to a seat.
Driver: (gesturing) Lemme see, Lmmsee.
Erik Shows his ticket plainly.
Driver: (tapping the machine) Two twenty-five.
Erik: What?
Driver: That'll be $2.25 - you don't have a sticker.
Erik: Huh?
Driver: Where's your sticker?
Erik: My what?
Driver: Your sticker. You need a sticker.
Erik: Where do I get a sticker?
Driver: When you buy the pass.
Erik: Oh. Well, I don't have $2.25 so, thanks, see you later.
Erik gets off the bus and walks the same way he walked weeks ago, before he had first noticed a series of people boarding the bus by displaying their monthly passes. He will later learn that the sticker is additional $39 a month. Bummer.
